Direct to Wharf De-hire
For the past six months we have been aggressively pushing back on shipping line directions to de-hire containers direct to the wharf as opposed to designated empty container yards.
Working on a case by case , container by container , basis we have achieved some success to date but as we suspected this has become the new normal in all states. This change has been implemented by shipping lines quickly and with little consultation at forwarder level of offsetting impacts on the importers. Our industry has grave concerns of the efficiency of this measure and we remain on high alert to measure the outcomes as we progress.
It can only be surmised the purpose behind the dramatic change is for cost cutting measures shipping line side and their associated costs at designated de-hire yards off wharf site.
Within the logistics chain this change has a dramatic impact on the transport costs associated with this direction. Container transport operators have been in ongoing discussion with us on the need to recover some of the additional landside logistics costs associated with the direct de-hire of empty containers to stevedore terminals.
Regrettably the increased cost cannot be absorbed into the existing cost of transport and we have no choice but to pass this cost to the importer. We will be introducing a De-hire directional Fee of AUD 90.00 per container for containers de-hired directly to terminals effective immediately.
De-Hire Directional Fee : AUD 90.00 per container
Oceanfreight General Rate Increase : North/North east Asia : 1st April 2018.
As well seasoned importers I am sure the current ebb and flow of oceanfreight rates southbound from Asia will not create any surprise in your arenas. It is a well traversed path of pre Chinese New Year hikes ( Happy New Year of the Dog) , post Chinese New Year falls ( when there is practically no cargo for shipping ) followed by an increase just as the factories are gearing up to export once more. It of course brings me no joy to deliver in the predictable increase forecast , yet ,regrettably here we are.
Shipping lines have universally announced their intention to implement a General Rate Increase effective on all southbound exports departing on or after 1st April 2018.
North/North-East Asia : Effective 1st April 2018
LCL : USD 12 .00 per cbm
20 GP : USD 300.00 per teu
40 GP : USD 600.00 per teu
The above quantum is the published intent of the carriers , though should they respond to negotiations with a lesser quantum, we shall of course pass those benefits through to the importer with a reduced application of same.
