PONDUS weigh-in checks conducted at stevedore facilities may result in fines if discrepancies are identified. Each stevedore sets its own weight amendment fee, which typically averages around AUD 400.00 per import unit or container.

Pondus is an innovative weighing solution that helps drive safety across the container handling sector. Mis-declared container weights pose significant safety risks across the supply chain—from transport operators to terminals and shipping lines. To address this, a new weighing solution introduced in 2021 enables statistical sampling of containers to detect discrepancies. When a variance of +/- 1 tonne is identified, customers are automatically notified, supporting improved compliance with Chain of Responsibility obligations.

The shipper remains responsible for ensuring that the accurate weight of each container is documented prior to arrival at the origin terminal. As part of the PONDUS program, both import and export containers are subject to statistical sampling for weigh-in checks at the designated stand.

Containers found to be mis-declared beyond a +/- 1 tonne tolerance will incur a Weight Amendment Fee. For import containers, this fee is charged to the transport carrier.

To minimise the risk of incurring a Weight Amendment Fee, it is essential that suppliers and shippers at origin accurately declare the full weight of each container. This includes:

  •             Cargo weight
  •             Dunnage
  •             Container tare weight

The PONDUS system has demonstrated proven effectiveness in identifying mis-declared containers by verifying gross mass (VGM) through statistical sampling.

Please circulate this notice to all shippers and reinforce the importance of accurate weight declaration for Verified Gross Mass (VGM). Shippers must exercise diligence in declaring container weights, ensuring alignment between their documented weight and the VGM recorded in origin systems. Any discrepancies must be identified and resolved prior to shipping.

With the implementation of enhanced weighing systems, there is no tolerance for error and no opportunity for adjudication once the container is loaded onto the vessel. Any weight amendment fees received will be advised to the importer at time of receipt and invoiced accordingly.
