Typhoon Season

Typhoons may occur any time from May to December. Usually, July to September is China’s main typhoon season, especially September.

Last week Typhoon Chanthu swept its way through East Asia disrupting port operations and negatively impacting on vessels en-route to North and North-East Asia ports. Both Shanghai and Ningbo port operations were suspended during the onslaught of the typhoon, one of the strongest this year.

Vessel arrivals and departures are currently delayed due to the inclement weather event.

The port disruption adds further negative outcomes to an already bleak time for global trade. Global Supply chains have been stretched to breaking point by a resurgence in consumer demand and shipping delays. A recent resurgence of the coronavirus in China worsened a container backlog at major Chinese ports, contributing to the ongoing crisis.

Last month, a terminal at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port was closed for two weeks after a dock worker tested positive for Covid-19.

A second city in South-Eastern China has seen a jump in COVID-19 cases in a delta variant outbreak that started late last week. The National Health Commission advise 59 new cases had been identified in the latest 24-hour period, more than doubling the total to 102.All are in Fujian province on China’s east coast. The port city of Xiamen has confirmed 33 cases in the past two days. The Chinese authorities have decided to confine the residents of Xiamen, a city of 5 million inhabitants and one of the most populated in the South-Eastern province of Fujian. These measures may impact upon cargo due to ship from this port in coming weeks.

Our teams will continue to work with origin offices to update shipment information for those shipments impacted by recent events.
